Dutch childcare scandal victims demand investigation into child removals

More than 300 children and family members affected by the Dutch childcare benefits scandal have submitted a letter to members of the Tweede Kamer requesting an independent investigation into their removals from their homes.

The scandal caused severe financial distress for many families. According to CBS data, over 2,000 children were placed in out-of-home care between 2015 and 2022, with nearly 650 still not living at home as of late June 2022. Many of these young people report they still do not understand the specific reasons for their separation from their families.

Advocates are calling for the opening of individual files to examine how the benefits affair influenced these decisions. While the Dutch government recently announced plans to offer apologies to affected children in January, representatives for the victims argue that words alone do not address the ongoing reality for these youths.
