Dutch coalition parties reach budget agreement after intense negotiations

The Dutch coalition parties D66, VVD, and CDA have reached an agreement on the national budget for the upcoming year after intensive negotiations spanning the weekend and much of Monday. The deal was finalized just in time to meet the deadline for submitting the draft to the Council of State, which must provide advice before Prinsjesdag.

The negotiations were marked by significant internal friction, particularly regarding proposed cuts to social security and reforms to the 'box 3' wealth tax. While D66 and CDA sought to maintain openness to left-wing opposition parties like PRO to secure a majority, the VVD expressed concerns about alienating right-wing parties such as JA21 and SGP.

Because the current minority government lacks a majority in the House of Representatives, the coalition will still need to seek support from opposition parties to pass the budget. Prime Minister Rob Jetten and Finance Minister Eelco Heinen are expected to provide further details following cabinet discussions.
