Netherlands communities hold local cleanups for World Cleanup Day

Communities across the Netherlands participated in various local cleanup initiatives tied to World Cleanup Day. In Alkmaar, residents and organizations conducted 23 different actions, including a session in the Daalmeer area that recovered over 21 kilograms of waste, primarily cigarette butts and various packaging.

In Raalte, local climate leadership highlighted the persistent issue of litter, particularly cigarette butts in smoke-free zones, noting the environmental damage caused by plastic-based waste. Meanwhile, in the Bolnes district of Ridderkerk, residents of all ages gathered to clean streets and engage with local community teams to discuss neighborhood livability.

In Mijdrecht, a cleanup at a business park involving local officials and entrepreneurs served as a symbolic kickoff for broader national and international activities. These efforts are part of a global movement recognized by the United Nations, where millions of volunteers work to reduce litter in parks, streets, and natural areas to increase environmental awareness.
