Dutch consumers shift to fixed energy contracts amid rising gas prices

Dutch households are increasingly seeking stability in energy costs as gas prices rise. Due to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and seasonal demand, the average gas price for consumers has risen from approximately 1.19 euro per cubic meter in late October 2025 to about 1.60 euro, representing a nearly 35 percent increase.

As a result, there is a growing trend toward fixed-rate energy contracts. Comparison sites such as Pricewise report that three-year contracts are being requested ten times more frequently than they were a year ago. While one-year contracts were previously popular due to bonuses, multi-year options are now preferred for the price certainty they provide.

In contrast to fixed contracts, dynamic energy contracts offer hourly fluctuating prices. Utilizing these contracts effectively requires smart technology, such as smart meters, energy apps, and automated appliances like heat pumps or smart washing machines, to shift consumption to periods when electricity is cheaper.
