Dutch courts hear cases involving embezzlement and phishing fraud
Two separate fraud cases were addressed in Dutch courts on Monday.
In Ede, a 28-year-old man from Arnhem appeared in court for embezzling over 420,000 euros from his former employer. While working as an administrative apprentice, he diverted funds by changing supplier and customer bank account numbers to his own. The defendant stated the theft was driven by a gambling addiction that began in his youth. The scheme, which lasted from November 2021 until April 2024, was discovered after his departure from the company.
In a separate case in Den Bosch, an 18-year-old from Heemstede faced trial for defrauding a 63-year-old woman from The Hague. The victim was targeted through a sophisticated phishing scheme involving SMS messages and fraudulent phone calls impersonating bank staff. Under pressure, the victim increased her transaction limits and shared her PIN, resulting in a loss of approximately 13,000 euros including stock losses. The victim expressed a sense of pity for the young perpetrator during the proceedings.
