Dutch courts issue community service for serious traffic accidents

Two separate court rulings in the Netherlands have resulted in community service sentences for drivers involved in serious traffic accidents.

A 29-year-old man in Waalre was sentenced to 120 hours of community service after overtaking a queue of cars during roadworks and colliding with a cyclist. The court in Den Bosch described his behavior as “plainly antisocial, very careless, and inattentive.” The accident, which occurred in September 2024, resulted in injuries to the cyclist, who required hospitalization and faced several months of inability to work.

In a separate case, a 59-year-old man was ordered to perform 200 hours of community service for a collision in Hasselt. The driver was traveling at high speed and crossed a solid line to overtake a vehicle, striking a car containing a pregnant woman. The accident caused severe injuries to the woman and resulted in the loss of her unborn child. The court noted the driver's “very dangerous driving behavior” but reduced the requested sentence slightly because the man expressed regret and had no prior criminal record.
