Dutch courts issue sentences for acid attack and youth care abuse
In separate legal developments in the Netherlands, courts have issued significant sentences for violent and sexual crimes.
The Den Bosch Court of Appeal upheld a 12-year prison sentence for a 37-year-old German man who attacked a woman with sulfuric acid in Burgh-Haamstede in May 2022. The defendant, who claimed he acted under pressure, also attempted to set the victim's home on fire in January 2023. He was ordered to pay 21,000 euros in material damages and 45,000 euros in immaterial damages.
In another case, the court in The Hague sentenced a 29-year-old worker at the iHUB youth care facility in Alphen to four years in prison for the rape of a 15-year-old girl. A 21-year-old colleague was also sentenced to six months in prison for the sexual assault of a 14-year-old girl. The court noted the severity of the breach of trust, as the victims were under the care of the defendants at the facility.
