Dutch courts sentence participants in sneaker theft and elderly fraud schemes

A former contestant of the Dutch reality show Temptation Island, 35‑year‑old Alex M. of ’s‑Hertogenbosch, was convicted by the Oost‑Brabant court for orchestrating a transport fraud that saw more than €200,000 worth of sneakers stolen from a warehouse in Veldhoven. He received 160 hours of community service and a two‑month suspended prison term, having arranged a fake truck delivery and coordinated the loading and transfer of twelve pallets of shoes.

In a separate case, a man was sentenced by the Rotterdam court to two years’ imprisonment, with one year suspended, for his role in a criminal group that impersonated police officers, bank staff and security personnel to defraud elderly residents in Delft, Vlaardingen, Rijswijk and Maassluis. The scheme involved telephone “babbeltrucs” that persuaded victims to hand over jewellery, bank cards, cash and personal documents, leading to further financial loss. The convicted individual also faced additional charges for involvement in an explosion at a Rotterdam shop and for assaulting family members, which the court considered in determining the sentence.
