Dutch energy market sees shift as long-term contracts become cheaper
Energy provider Vattenfall has reduced its annual contract rates for new customers, following a decline in gas prices on the exchange. The price drop includes a reduction of nearly 4 cents per cubic meter for gas and 0.8 cents per kWh for electricity. With this adjustment, Vattenfall currently offers the cheapest one-year fixed contract on the market.
A notable shift is occurring in the Dutch energy market where three-year fixed contracts have become cheaper than one-year contracts. While three-year contracts were €371 more expensive per year in January, they are now €196 cheaper than the cheapest one-year option. This inversion is driven by the fact that one-year contracts have increased in price by 44.6% since January, whereas three-year contracts rose by only 16.7%.
As a result, consumer behavior is changing. In the first week of September, 15% of customers switching providers opted for a three-year contract, compared to an average of 8% earlier in the year. Providers such as Innova Energie and Gewoon Energie currently offer competitive three-year rates, with gas prices around €1.52 per cubic meter.
