Dutch energy sector calls for flexibility to manage transition costs
Stakeholders in the Dutch energy sector are emphasizing the urgent need for flexibility, storage, and new contract models to prevent the energy transition from becoming unaffordable. Grid congestion, volatile prices, and financing challenges currently threaten to delay growth and sustainability efforts.
Netbeheer Nederland has highlighted that without strategic investments in green gas, heat, and system flexibility, grid tariffs could rise unnecessarily. The organization advocates for a new tariff model to provide households and businesses with more control over their energy bills, noting that the current system disproportionately affects low-consumption households.
To mitigate costs, experts suggest prioritizing immediate actions such as energy savings, insulation, and the use of hybrid heat pumps. Additionally, the development of collective heat networks and energy hubs—where companies can share and manage energy—is being promoted as a way to manage demand and reduce the burden on the electrical grid.
