Dutch EV drivers boost cross‑border travel and enjoy near‑free home charging

Data from mobility provider Travelcard show that Dutch electric‑vehicle owners are driving abroad more often during the summer holidays. Charging sessions by Dutch drivers rose 55 % across 31 European countries, with the strongest growth in popular holiday destinations – Spain (+276 %), Italy (+114 %) and Austria (+101 %). Germany, France and Belgium now host 35 %, 26 % and 18 % of all foreign charging sessions respectively, reflecting the importance of these nations as transit routes.

In parallel, Dutch energy firm Tibber, together with partner Joulo, has introduced an automated system to register ERE (emission‑reduction‑unit) certificates for customers. The scheme rewards home EV charging with an ERE bonus of €0.15 per kWh, lowering the effective electricity price to about €0.02 per kWh. Users can save €250‑€500 annually, with total savings of €750‑€1,000 compared with a fixed‑rate tariff. Tibber’s Country Manager Wilko Klaassen said the partnership makes home charging “almost free” and provides drivers with financial incentives for flexible, low‑cost electricity use.
