Dutch exporters receive large US import duty refunds

Dutch companies are receiving significant refunds for import duties previously imposed by the United States. These repayments follow a ruling by the US Supreme Court that determined a package of import tariffs was unlawful.

Major Dutch exporters are expected to receive substantial sums. Philips reported a refund of €186 million, while Shell is estimated to receive between €500 million and €1.5 billion. Other large companies, including Heineken and Ahold Delhaize, are also anticipating refunds ranging from €100 million to €350 million. Globally, hundreds of thousands of claims totaling approximately $129 billion have been filed through a specialized US portal.

Industry organization EvoFenedex noted that while the rapid and orderly nature of the repayments is positive, the funds are not a gift but rather the return of the companies' own money. Eligibility for refunds is limited to the 'Importer of Record'—the party formally responsible for the import and the payment of the duties. This may include Dutch companies with US branches or those contractually designated to handle US import declarations. There is uncertainty regarding whether companies will lower consumer prices following these refunds, as many had previously increased prices to offset the tariff costs.
