Farmers and rural residents across the Netherlands have staged a series of visible actions against the Jetten cabinet’s nitrogen‑reduction plan. The protest platform SamenOptrekken – which brings together Agractie, the Dutch Milk Farmers’ Union (NMV), Vee & Logistiek Nederland, NVP, EMK and the Union for Rural Residents – has organised local actions on highways, bridges and viaducts, with tractors displaying inverted Dutch flags but deliberately avoiding road blockages.

The demonstrators demand that Agriculture Minister Jaimi van Essen withdraw the “nitrogen brief”, reopen negotiations with all agricultural organisations and keep the five irrevocable licences for Brabant farms. A national rally, dubbed “Right to Farmer Day”, is scheduled for 14 August 2026 at the province house in Den Bosch, with further actions planned for Prinsjesdag on 15 September. Protest sites have included the A27 near Gorinchem, the A4 near Leiden, the Merwedebrug, and roundabouts in Nunspeet where green space was set alight.

The government’s plan calls for a 40 % cut in nitrogen emissions by 2035 and limits dairy farms to a maximum of 2.6 cows per hectare, prompting concerns that licences could be revoked and farms forced to downsize. The petition “Red het Platteland” has gathered roughly 45 000 signatures, and earlier actions drew about 5 000 participants in Barneveld.
