Dutch farmers plan nationwide protests over nitrogen policy

The Dutch cabinet aims to cut agricultural nitrogen emissions by 42‑46% from 2019 levels, introducing measures such as a 2.6 cattle‑per‑hectare limit and new zones around Natura 2000 nature areas. Farmers who would have to stop, relocate or invest in mitigation face significant financial strain.

In response, about a hundred farmers gathered in Hardenberg, organized by groups including Trekkergroep Hardenberg, Agractie, Farmers Defence Force and LTO Overijssel, to plan further actions. They announced peaceful protests to begin Monday night and a series of nationwide demonstrations next week, with some 3 000 farms in Overijssel directly affected. Provincial board member Aad Straathof noted that the transition could also create opportunities for farmers.
