Dutch farmers stage protests against government nitrogen plan

Farmers gathered on a viaduct over the A7 near Hoogkerk in the province of Groningen, joining a series of visible actions that have taken place on Dutch highways without disrupting traffic. The protests are directed at the cabinet’s new nitrogen‑reduction package, which seeks to cut agricultural emissions by 46 % and limit cattle density to 2.6 heads per hectare, while creating nitrogen‑free zones around nature reserves.

Agricultural organisations such as Farmers Defence Force and Agractie say the measures will heavily affect farms in Groningen, where about a quarter of holdings already exceed the cattle limit. The political group PRO Berkelland urged local farmers to engage in dialogue, citing a €20 billion transition budget announced by the government and a ministerial letter that allows provinces to develop area‑specific plans to restore permit processing.

Both the protests and the political appeal highlight ongoing tension between the farming sector and the Dutch government over how to meet European environmental standards while preserving agricultural viability.
