Dutch father accused of orchestrating child abduction via fake youth care workers

A 51-year-old man, identified as Simon Peter B., is accused of orchestrating the abduction of his 11-year-old son from a scouting club in Harbrinkhoek, known as Jong Nederland, on February 5.

According to the Public Prosecutor, the man hired two accomplices who posed as youth care workers. The individuals used forged identification and documents from Jeugdzorg Nederland to convince scouts that the child needed to be taken immediately for his own safety. The boy was subsequently taken to the father's residence in Uelsen, Germany.

The prosecution noted that the father, who has been in a long-standing custody dispute with the child's mother, had previously attempted to circumvent parental authority on two other occasions. The defendant denies the charges, claiming he acted out of a misunderstanding regarding legal custody and a need to care for his ill wife.

During a preliminary hearing in Almelo, the court ruled that the defendant may await the remainder of the trial in freedom, subject to strict conditions. He is prohibited from entering the municipalities of Almelo and Tubbergen.
