Dutch Finance Minister seeks parliamentary support for 2027 budget

Dutch Finance Minister Eelco Heinen is seeking broad parliamentary support for the 2027 budget as the deadline for submission to the Council of State approaches. While the minority coalition of D66, VVD, and CDA holds 66 seats, it requires additional votes to secure a majority.

Political parties are divided on the direction of the budget. The PRO and JA21 parties have demanded that the government choose a clear ideological path, either left or right. In contrast, ChristenUnie and 50Plus have expressed a preference for the government to operate as a minority cabinet, seeking majorities on a proposal-by-proposal basis rather than committing to a specific ideological bloc.

Key points of contention include proposed increases to the mandatory deductible, cuts to social security, and a 'freedom contribution' intended to fund defense. ChristenUnie leader Mirjam Bikker has specifically opposed these measures, suggesting instead that the government look toward wealth and corporate profits. The cabinet aims to finalize the draft Millionennota by next Friday.
