Dutch food and e-commerce markets show growth driven by prices and top retailers
The Dutch food market is projected to grow by 2.8% in 2026, reaching a total turnover of €81.4 billion. According to the FoodService Instituut Nederland (FSIN), this growth is primarily driven by price increases rather than volume. While food retail turnover is expected to rise by 2.9%, the foodservice sector is projected to see a 2.6% increase in turnover despite a 1.4% decline in volume. FSIN Director Patrick Bramer noted that consumers are becoming more price-conscious due to inflation and international uncertainty, leading to a greater focus on discounts in retail and more critical decision-making regarding dining out.
In the e-commerce sector, the top 100 Dutch webshops saw a 7% revenue increase in 2025, with the top ten growing by 11%. Bol surpassed €5 billion in turnover, maintaining its position as the largest online retailer, followed by Albert Heijn and Coolblue. Amazon has moved up to fourth place, overtaking Zalando. Data also indicates significant cross-border shopping, with 14% of online purchases made outside the Netherlands. While China receives a high volume of orders, Germany remains the largest recipient of cross-border spending by value, accounting for 26 cents of every euro spent abroad.
