Dutch fraudster avoids jail, receives community service for selling fake tickets to 251 families

A 57‑year‑old Dutch fraudster operated the website "ZonFly", selling counterfeit airline tickets to families planning vacations. A total of 251 victims filed police reports after discovering the tickets were worthless, leaving them stranded at airports and facing additional travel costs. The lower court originally ordered a prison term of at least ten months, but the conviction was appealed. After a prolonged 1½‑year delay, the appellate court ruled that imprisonment would cause "disproportionately large negative consequences" for the offender and instead imposed a community‑service sentence of 240 hours of cleaning work.
