Dutch government debates future of Moerdijk village amid energy and port expansion plans

Residents of Moerdijk gathered in the public gallery of the Tweede Kamer as the government addressed the village’s uncertain future. The debate focused on whether the settlement can be preserved or must give way to large‑scale energy projects, harbour expansion and hydrogen‑related industry that the state deems vital for the national economy.

State Secretary for Climate and Green Growth Conny De Bat acknowledged past missteps, stating, “Dit dossier is verre van goed gegaan de afgelopen jaren,” and pledged to restore trust. She said a joint process with the municipality and the province will be pursued, with a meeting scheduled for Monday to define what will actually be built in the Moerdijk area and whether the village can be saved.

The area is strategically important for wind‑energy generation and future hydrogen production, and many parliamentarians warned that abandoning the village could repeat past precedents where Dutch settlements disappeared for industrial development.
