Dutch homebuyers prioritize green neighborhoods for comfort and health

A recent ASN Bank survey of Dutch home seekers found that seven out of ten consider a green neighbourhood very important, while only six percent view it as irrelevant. Respondents cite cooler indoor temperatures in summer – four in ten say greenery helps lower heat – and improved mental wellbeing, with 62 % linking nearby green space to better health. Half of those surveyed also value biodiversity and recreational benefits, and the demand for green surroundings is strong across all age groups.

The study also reveals a willingness among buyers to accept smaller homes if quality factors such as good location, smart layout or ample outdoor space are present. Nearly half would consider a smaller, well‑designed dwelling, especially if it offers sound insulation or high‑quality finishes. Perceived chances of finding a suitable home rose modestly, with average scores climbing from 4.6 to 5.3 out of 10. Affordability remains a concern: 56 % of starters now cite price as a barrier, down from 66 % in the previous quarter.
