Dutch households shift toward dynamic energy contracts

Dutch households are increasingly opting for dynamic and variable energy contracts over fixed-term agreements. According to the Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM), the number of fixed contracts decreased by 67,000 in June, while dynamic contracts—which react quickly to wholesale market prices—rose by over 3 percent to 33,000. Variable contracts also saw an increase of 32,000.

This shift is driven by fluctuating wholesale prices, particularly gas, which remains volatile due to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and unrest near the Strait of Hormuz. While gas prices saw temporary relief following a preliminary peace agreement between the United States and Iran, they remain significantly higher than pre-war levels.

Market comparisons show a significant price gap between providers. For one-year fixed contracts, the most expensive options from providers like OM Energie and Energie VanOns can cost nearly €500 more per year than the cheapest options, such as those from UnitedConsumers. For households with solar panels, this annual price difference can exceed €540.
