Dutch insurers warn homeowners regarding home battery insurance
The Verbond van Verzekeraars (Dutch Association of Insurers) is warning consumers to verify insurance coverage for home batteries before purchase. As the adoption of home energy storage grows rapidly in the Netherlands, many households are overlooking whether these installations are covered under their existing policies.
Data from grid operators shows a significant surge in registered batteries, with 63,944 units recorded in July, nearly four times the amount registered in August of the previous year. While batteries permanently attached to a home typically fall under buildings insurance (opstalverzekering) and portable units may fall under contents insurance (inboedelverzekering), there is no standard regulation. Insurers often require that the installation of a home battery be reported to them.
In local communities like Wommels, information sessions are being organized to discuss the benefits of home batteries, especially as the ability to offset solar energy costs (salderen) is expected to disappear in 2027. Increasing self-consumption of solar power is becoming a priority for households and agricultural businesses alike.
