Dutch lawmakers debate minimum amount for mandatory internship stipends

During an education debate in the Dutch House of Representatives, several political factions called for a mandatory minimum amount for student internship compensation. Education Minister Rianne Letschert (D66) previously announced plans to legally establish internship stipends for MBO, HBO, and university students, but has not yet specified a minimum amount.

Minister Letschert argued that specific amounts should be determined by individual sectors to prevent a reduction in available internship positions. However, political parties have proposed various figures: PRO suggested 750 euros per month for full-time internships, the SP advocated for 800 euros to match government rates, and D66 expressed support for a guideline of at least 500 euros.

The proposed law is intended to take effect in 2029. While the VVD is waiting for sector agreements, JA21 expressed criticism of the legislative proposal due to the risk of fewer internships being offered. The Minister noted that if sector agreements result only in symbolic amounts, she may introduce a statutory minimum at a later date.
