Dutch media fined for reporting on weight-loss drugs

The Dutch Health and Youth Care Inspectorate (IGJ) has imposed fines totaling tens of thousands of euros on several Dutch media outlets, including NRC, De Volkskrant, AD, and De Telegraaf, for their reporting on weight-loss medications such as Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro.

DPG Media received a fine of 51,000 euros regarding articles published in De Volkskrant and AD. One specific article in De Volkskrant discussed a study from the journal Nature regarding the health benefits and side effects of these medications. The IGJ maintains that such reporting constitutes prohibited public advertising for prescription drugs under Dutch law.

Journalistic organizations, including the Dutch Association of Journalists (NVJ), have expressed serious concerns. Editors have labeled the move as “censorship” and an attack on press freedom, warning of a “chilling effect” where journalists may engage in self-censorship to avoid legal repercussions. The NVJ and other press freedom groups are seeking discussions with the IGJ to address these developments.
