Dutch Military Aggression of 1947 and Other July Historical Milestones

On 21 July 1947 the Netherlands launched its first military aggression in Indonesia, deploying over 100,000 troops to Java and Sumatra. The operation aimed to reclaim strategic plantations and natural resources, contravening the earlier Linggarjati Agreement between the two nations.

The following day, 22 July, is noted for several historic events: the 1917 birth of Adam Malik, who later served as Indonesia’s third vice‑president and held key diplomatic and parliamentary roles; the 1963 independence of Sarawak from the United Kingdom, after which the territory joined the Federation of Malaysia; and the 2014 election of Joko Widodo and his running mate Jusuf Kalla as Indonesia’s president and vice‑president.
