Dutch Military Intelligence Director Peter Reesink Exposed for Public Strava Use

Peter Reesink, director of the Netherlands’ Military Intelligence and Security Service (MIVD), was tracked for years through a public Strava account that displayed his cycling and running routes. The data revealed his home address, travel between the MIVD headquarters and his residence, and periods when he was on vacation, violating Dutch defence security guidelines that prohibit public sharing of location information. After the issue was reported, the account was set to private and Reesink requested its deletion, stating he was unaware the profile remained active. A defence ministry spokesperson said Reesink regretted the breach and would act differently in the future. The case highlights broader concerns that fitness‑app data can expose military personnel and installations, a risk previously noted in incidents involving Dutch soldiers, French officials and other armed forces worldwide.
