Dutch Minister targets healthcare equality for Caribbean Netherlands

Minister Mirjam Sterk, responsible for Long-term Care, Youth, and Sport, has announced plans to improve healthcare and youth services in the Caribbean Netherlands. In a letter to the House of Representatives, the Minister emphasized the need to bring the quality of care in Bonaire, Sint Eustatius, and Saba to a level equivalent to that of the European Netherlands.

Recognizing the unique, small-scale nature of the islands, the government intends to implement customized solutions rather than direct copies of European Dutch models. Key focus areas include increased prevention efforts, social support, and strengthened primary care.

Recent initiatives include the ‘NIX18’ campaign to raise awareness regarding the legal alcohol age, and the renovation of playgrounds to encourage physical activity. Additionally, efforts are underway to strengthen primary healthcare, such as ensuring GP practices on Bonaire meet specific quality accreditation standards.
