Dutch minority cabinet faces budget deadlock in parliament
The Dutch minority cabinet faces significant challenges in securing majorities for its budget plans following the Prinsjesdag presentations. Opposition leaders from Pro, JA21, and SGP are demanding that the government choose a clear political direction, either leaning 'left' or 'right', rather than attempting to find a middle ground.
JA21 leader Eerdmans suggested a shift away from seeking a single total deal, proposing instead that parties might support specific budget components individually. However, he indicated that JA21 would likely oppose climate plans and asylum budgets related to the Spreidingswet. In response, PVV leader Wilders warned that such partial agreements could lead to the opposition being played against one another.
Meanwhile, parliamentary statistics for the 2025/2026 session show that the Tweede Kamer held 247 two-minute debates, accounting for 61% of plenary debates. While the total number of motions submitted fell by 7% compared to the previous year, the number of motions per parliamentary day increased, reaching its highest ratio since 2019/20.
