Dutch municipalities adjust local taxes in Maasdriel and Vlissingen

Municipalities in the Netherlands are implementing significant changes to local taxation. In Maasdriel, the municipal executive has proposed a 28.3 percent increase in property tax (ozb) starting in 2027. This measure is intended to address a projected 3.5 million euro budget deficit, primarily driven by unforeseen increases in costs for youth care. Finance Alderman Bernd Taselaar noted that while the increase is substantial, it is a necessary step to prevent deeper financial instability.

In contrast, the municipality of Vlissingen has decided to abolish the dog tax, effective January 1 of next year. Alderman Coen Bertijn described the tax as “outdated,” noting that its historical purposes, such as managing stray dogs and rabies, are no longer relevant. While the move will result in a loss of approximately 350,000 euros in annual revenue, the council determined that the municipality can afford the reduction.
