Dutch municipalities appoint new child mayors
Two Dutch municipalities have officially appointed new child mayors to promote youth involvement in local democracy.
In Waalre, 10-year-old Bex Welvaart has been appointed as the new child mayor, succeeding Hannah. The appointment took place during a ceremony where Bex received the official mayoral chain. The election process saw participation from 14 candidates.
In Oldambt, 10-year-old Liam Oldenburger has been installed as the child mayor alongside the municipality's first official children's council. Liam, a student from Winschoten, intends to advocate for initiatives such as school breakfasts, free fruit, more affordable sports, and ensuring all children learn to swim.
