Goeree-Overflakkee council approves tax increase amid budget shortfall

On 9 July 2026 the municipal council of Goeree‑Overflakkee adopted a ‘tussenscenario’, a middle‑ground fiscal plan that raises local taxes while scaling back some services. The plan aims to avert a projected structural deficit of €10 million by 2030, potentially rising to €16 million by 2040, caused by higher healthcare costs, inflation and reduced national transfers.

Council members debated the future of the islands’ swimming pools, with the mayor indicating a proposal to keep two pools open in 2027, possibly involving a commercial operator. Other discussions focused on preserving basic amenities in village centres while seeking creative funding solutions. The adopted scenario does not constitute an automatic list of closures but provides a framework for further decisions.

The decision reflects the municipality’s broader “Samen Keuzes Maken” programme, which seeks long‑term financial sustainability through cost‑containment and targeted investments.
