Dutch municipalities debate fatbike restrictions in pedestrian zones

Municipalities in the Netherlands are addressing safety concerns regarding fatbikes in pedestrian and shopping areas.

In Helmond, city officials have decided against implementing a specific ban on fatbikes for the time being. Instead, the city will rely on stricter enforcement of existing cycling bans in the city center, which prohibit cycling between 09:00 and 21:00. Authorities noted that creating a separate regulation for one specific type of electric bike could face legal challenges, as seen in other cities. Recent enforcement actions have already resulted in fines and the seizure of non-compliant vehicles.

In Oosterhout, local council member Willem van Hooijdonk has proposed a daily ban on fatbikes within pedestrian zones and specific shopping centers, including Arkendonk and Zuiderhout. The proposal seeks to restrict fatbike access seven days a week from 09:00 to 23:00. This follows incidents involving high-speed riders in crowded areas, including a scooter incident that injured an elderly man, and ongoing complaints from local business owners and residents regarding safety in the market and shopping streets.
