Dutch municipalities face budget challenges and opposition proposals
Municipalities in the Netherlands are navigating complex financial landscapes characterized by necessary austerity and competing development goals. In Dordrecht, the multi-year budget includes approximately €15.5 million in planned cuts alongside significant investments in greening and urban development. A major focus is the Maasterras project, for which the municipality has set aside a €47.5 million reserve to mitigate potential construction risks and unforeseen setbacks.
In Zaanstad, opposition parties—including ROSA, SP, PRO, and Partij voor de Dieren—have presented an alternative budget titled ‘Het kan écht anders!’ to counter proposed municipal cuts. While the local government seeks to reduce spending on collective health insurance for low-income residents and individual income allowances, the opposition proposes raising funds by increasing costs for tourists, water heavy-users, motorists, and owners of vacant real estate. Their plan also includes funding for basic income experiments and increased support for the homeless.
