Dutch municipalities face looming budget deficits from 2028

The municipality of Druten presented its 2026 Perspective Note, outlining ambitions and a balanced budget for 2027 while warning of financial uncertainty after 2028 due to limited national funding. Council members are set to discuss the note on 2 July and vote on 9 July, with the document serving as a basis for the 2027‑2030 budget and the municipality’s long‑term vision.

In De Ronde Venen, the latest financial outlook predicts a switch from a €243,000 surplus in 2027 to a €3.8 million deficit in 2028, rising to over €4.7 million the following year. Local VVD and PRO party leaders cited the same national funding shortfall, warning that cuts to services or tax hikes could affect residents if additional resources are not secured.

Both councils stress the need for tighter spending, efficiency measures, and protection of essential social services amid growing fiscal pressure from the central government.
