Dutch municipalities implement electricity capacity priority rules

Municipalities in the Netherlands are implementing new policies to manage electricity grid congestion. The Hoeksche Waard municipality has established rules to prioritize transport capacity for housing and educational facilities. This policy allows projects with long lead times to request capacity from grid operators at an earlier stage to mitigate delays caused by the increasing demand for electricity from electrification and sustainability efforts.

In Valkenburg aan de Geul, a priority list has been finalized for housing project applications submitted under similar capacity request rules. The municipality has ranked these projects based on completeness and compliance with national and local criteria. These ranked projects will be submitted to the grid operator, Enexis. However, the municipality noted that this ranking does not guarantee the acquisition of capacity, as final approval remains the responsibility of Enexis based on available grid space and national regulations.
