Dutch municipalities implement new housing programs for asylum seekers

Municipalities in the Netherlands are implementing strategies to address the housing and reception of asylum seekers, status holders, and displaced Ukrainians.

In Krimpenerwaard, the local government has established a temporary 'Programma Nieuwkomers' to manage these responsibilities. The municipality currently faces a backlog in housing status holders and is under provincial supervision. A temporary program team is working to develop solutions that balance legal obligations with local livability, safety, and public support.

Meanwhile, Alphen aan den Rijn has accelerated the housing of 42 status holders to help relieve pressure on the Ter Apel asylum seeker center, following a call from Asylum Minister Bart van den Brink. This initiative aims to facilitate faster movement from asylum centers to permanent housing. The municipality expects to have housed a total of 170 status holders by September and faces a target of 234 for 2026, alongside requirements under the Spreidingswet.
