Dutch municipalities launch circular and biobased construction initiatives

Several Dutch municipalities are implementing new regional agreements to promote sustainability in the construction and agricultural sectors.

In Westfriesland, the municipalities of Stede Broec, Enkhuizen, and Drechterland have joined the Circular Deal for Secondary Building Materials. This initiative aims to improve the retention and reuse of materials such as concrete, wood, steel, glass, and bricks from demolition projects. Participants will conduct material and raw material inventories prior to demolition to ensure suitable components are redirected to new construction or renovation projects rather than becoming waste.

In a separate regional effort, the municipalities of Meierijstad, ’s-Hertogenbosch, Bernheze, Oss, Boxtel, Sint-Michielsgestel, and Maashorst have signed a covenant for biobased cultivation and construction. This collaboration seeks to stimulate the use of natural materials like wood, flax, hemp, and straw in building projects. By connecting local agriculture with the housing sector, the initiative aims to create a regional supply chain that reduces CO2 emissions, supports climate adaptation, and promotes biodiversity.
