Dutch municipalities launch road safety campaigns for school reopening

As schools in the Netherlands prepare to reopen on August 17, local municipalities are launching initiatives to increase road safety for students.

In Velsen, the municipality is running the ‘wij gaan weer naar school’ campaign. Utilizing recognizable Dick Bruna illustrations to influence driver behavior and encourage slower speeds, the campaign uses posters, billboards, and school banners to alert motorists to the increased presence of children. Mobility official Nathanael Korf emphasized the need for drivers to account for children who may be less attentive to traffic after the summer break.

In the Medemblik region, specific attention is being directed toward increased bicycle traffic between Opperdoes and the FC Medemblik grounds. This is due to students from De Wegwijzer primary school attending classes at a temporary location. To manage the influx of cyclists, authorities are deploying traffic controllers, providing students with safety vests, and installing extra signage along key routes, particularly near the N240 roundabout and the Almereweg-Voorhamer intersection.
