Dutch municipalities Olst‑Wijhe and Dinkelland approve new council agreements

The municipality of Olst‑Wijhe adopted a new governing accord that shifts focus from drafting visions to delivering results. The agreement stresses reliable, financially sound implementation of existing plans, including the construction of about 400 new homes, expanded local services, climate‑resilient measures and a stronger social base. "Less paper, more doing," coalition spokesperson Ronnie Niemeijer said. The council also committed to a balanced budget and will translate the accord into a college programme under mayor Sietske Poepjes.

In the neighbouring Overijssel municipality of Dinkelland, the full council—rather than only the coalition—drafted a 61‑point, four‑year plan covering housing, sustainability, safety, mobility and other local priorities. The council agreed to follow the national “Spreidingswet” on asylum‑seeker placement, despite the municipality currently hosting none. Benny Tijkotte, leader of the Lokaal Dinkelland faction, highlighted the democratic nature of the approach. A coalition of Lokaal Dinkelland and the VVD now governs, with new aldermen installed alongside the council‑wide agreement.
