Dutch municipalities pass motions supporting farmers and rural interests

Municipal councils in Borger-Odoorn and Westerwolde have passed motions calling for increased attention to the future of farmers and rural areas in response to national nitrogen policies.

In Borger-Odoorn, the PVV and Lokale Kracht parties successfully passed a motion seeking consultation with other Drenthe municipalities regarding the impact of nitrogen measures on the countryside. The parties aim to send a joint statement or urgent letter to the national government, the House of Representatives, and the province to ensure local interests are not ignored.

Similarly, in Westerwolde, a coalition including BBB, PVV, and several local parties passed the motion ‘Give farmer and countryside a future’. The motion addresses the cumulative impact of various nitrogen-related measures. Proponents argue that the decline of farming businesses affects the broader economy, including transport, construction, and local services. The council has requested that the executive branch collaborate with other rural municipalities to present a unified front to the national government and the province of Groningen.
