Dutch municipalities present balanced 2027 budgets amid rising costs

Dutch municipalities Het Hogeland and Tytsjerksteradiel have presented balanced budgets for 2027, though both face significant financial challenges and rising costs for residents.

In Het Hogeland, the municipal executive has established a budget that prioritizes investments in village safety, housing, and infrastructure, such as improved cycling and walking routes. Finance Alderman Eltjo Dijkhuis noted that while the budget is balanced, the administration must make difficult choices regarding which ambitions can be realized due to upcoming financial pressures. Key economic focuses include developing climate-resilient business parks and enhancing tourism in Lauwersoog.

Tytsjerksteradiel is presenting a balanced budget with a 216,000 euro surplus, but residents will face increased costs. Waste collection levies are set to rise by nearly 17% for multi-person households, driven by national taxes on CO2 and waste incineration. Additionally, property taxes (OZB) will increase by 5%, and rental costs for sports facilities are expected to rise significantly in 2027 and 2028.
