Dutch municipalities split on New Year's Eve firework exemptions

Dutch municipalities are adopting differing approaches regarding organized firework displays following a national ban on consumer fireworks that took effect on August 1.

In the municipalities of Waadhoeke and Ooststellingwerf, officials have decided not to grant exemptions for organized firework shows. Waadhoeke cited insufficient time to properly establish safety rules and assess organizations, locations, and supervision requirements under the newly implemented 'Wet veilige jaarwisseling'.

Conversely, Raalte has decided to allow associations and foundations to apply for exemptions to host organized displays, provided they are safe and responsible. Mayor Rob Zuidema stated that while the new law changes how New Year's Eve looks, the municipality wants to provide space for local initiatives. Kampen is also planning to offer similar opportunities for organized activities.

Other regional municipalities, including Staphorst, Steenwijkerland, Borne, Enschede, and Deventer, have opted not to grant exemptions. In Zwolle, the municipality will organize its own firework show rather than granting individual exemptions.
