Netherlands municipalities struggle with fireworks ban enforcement

Following a national ban on consumer fireworks in the Netherlands, various municipalities are struggling with the practical implementation of the law. Many local leaders, including mayors in Westfriesland, Eemsdelta, and Twenterand, have announced they will not grant exemptions to associations or organizations for fireworks displays. The primary reason cited is the lack of enforcement capacity; officials argue that monitoring compliance and managing complex permit requirements during the busy New Year period is unfeasible.

In Twenterand, the mayor stated that the municipality will only intervene in cases of extreme excess, noting that the regulation is difficult to enforce. Similarly, in Dronten, officials declined to establish local collection points for illegal fireworks due to high costs and strict safety requirements, directing residents to nearby cities like Lelystad or Zwolle instead.

To assist with the transition, the national government has organized anonymous and free collection days throughout September and October. These initiatives allow citizens to surrender prohibited fireworks without fear of fines, aiming to reduce fire risks and injuries during the upcoming year-end celebrations.
