Dutch opposition resists healthcare budget over compensation concerns
Opposition parties in the Dutch House of Representatives have expressed reluctance to support the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport's budget due to uncertainties regarding compensation for chronically ill citizens. A primary concern is the planned abolition of the healthcare tax deduction in 2028, a move that could cost some individuals thousands of euros annually.
While funds have been allocated to mitigate the impact on vulnerable groups, specific plans for their deployment remain unclear. Minister Hermans stated that new proposals will be presented next month to address these concerns and secure the majority support needed by the minority cabinet.
Additional points of contention include a proposed 15 euro increase in the mandatory deductible and the impact of rising monthly healthcare premiums, which are set to increase by 12.50 euros for the upcoming year. The cabinet intends to phase out the tax deduction to reduce costs and complexity, arguing that the current system benefits higher-income individuals unnecessarily.
