Dutch parents face dilemma over child smartphone use

A study conducted by iVox for Swappie reveals the dilemma faced by parents regarding when to provide children with their first smartphone. Research involving 316 parents in the Netherlands shows a conflict between safety concerns and mental health risks.

Approximately 75% of parents cite safety as a primary reason for providing a phone, with that figure rising to 82% among mothers. Additionally, 68% of parents value the ability to remain in constant contact with their children. However, 62% of parents express concern regarding the impact of smartphones on a child's mental well-being and self-image, while 51% fear their child might be socially excluded without one.

Other contributing factors include school-related needs, cited by 61% of parents, and social pressure from peers and other parents, noted by 32%. While Dutch government advice suggests providing a first smartphone around grade 8 and waiting until age 15 for social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram, many parents find themselves making decisions based on practical necessity and social dynamics.
