Dutch Parliament debates budget as JA21 shifts negotiation stance
During the general political debates regarding the Jetten cabinet's budget, Joost Eerdmans of JA21 signaled a shift in strategy, suggesting a willingness to negotiate with coalition parties on a subject-by-subject basis rather than demanding a binary choice between left and right support.
This change in position caused confusion among other political factions. PVV leader Geert Wilders criticized the move as “chaos in the chaos,” arguing that the cabinet would simply shop for support on specific issues, such as asylum or nitrogen, depending on the topic. Meanwhile, Jesse Klaver of the GroenLinks-PvdA alliance maintained a stance demanding the cabinet make definitive choices, and criticized the potential for right-wing and liberal parties to form a closed bloc.
The debates also touched upon immigration, with Jesse Klaver asserting that no one in the House supports open borders. This claim was contested by Forum for Democratie (FVD), which cited migration statistics to challenge the characterization of current border policies.
