Dutch parliamentary inquiry investigates COVID-19 oversight

The Dutch parliamentary inquiry committee into the COVID-19 pandemic is conducting hearings to determine whether the House of Representatives (Tweede Kamer) was able to effectively monitor the government during the crisis.

Former VVD parliamentary leader Klaas Dijkhoff is scheduled for questioning regarding the relationship between the legislature and the executive. Dijkhoff noted that during the pandemic, the role of the House often shifted toward ‘thinking along’ rather than active oversight, as decision-making was heavily dominated by ministers such as Mark Rutte, Hugo de Jonge, and Ferd Grapperhaus.

Dijkhoff described the House as being ‘completely caught off guard’ by the outbreak in March 2020. He indicated that the crisis created a sense of unity that resulted in ‘less room for politics,’ often leaving the parliament in a position of receiving information rather than actively shaping it.
