Dutch police expand drone use for traffic enforcement

The Dutch police are expanding the use of drones to monitor traffic violations from the air. This new application allows authorities to oversee large areas and record offenses without stopping drivers directly. While drones have previously been used for missing persons, accidents, and events, their use for traffic enforcement has raised concerns regarding digital surveillance and privacy.

Because drones can observe many road users simultaneously from high altitudes without being easily noticed, questions have been raised about the limits of government oversight. The police have stated that their drones are not easily recognizable and that they intend to use signage to notify the public when drones are operating in a specific area. Additionally, officials must weigh whether the same objective can be achieved through less intrusive means.

Member of Parliament Peter van Duijvenvoorde has submitted formal questions to the Minister of Justice and Security regarding this expansion. His inquiries focus on the legal basis for drone use, the proportionality of such enforcement, technical capabilities, data processing protocols, and the potential for further expansion of this surveillance method.
