Dutch police seize 3,800kg of illegal fireworks in major crackdown

Dutch authorities have intensified efforts to combat the illegal trade of heavy fireworks, which are increasingly being used as weapons in attacks against police, emergency responders, and private citizens. Police Chief Janny Knol noted that the use of these explosives has escalated, posing significant risks to public safety and first responders throughout the year.

In a major recent operation, police arrested seven suspects, aged 31 to 60, suspected of importing and large-scale trading of illegal fireworks and money laundering. The investigation, conducted by the National Expertise and Operations Unit in cooperation with German police, led to the seizure of 3,800 kilograms of high-grade F4 category fireworks, including cakes and shells. The explosives were reportedly stored in Germany before being transported into the Netherlands.

During the crackdown, multiple shipments were intercepted near Schaijk, Arnhem, Heijnen, and Ulft. In addition to the fireworks, authorities seized data carriers and 30,000 euros in cash. Carola Schouten, chair of the Offensive Against Explosives, stated that while attacks have decreased compared to the previous year, the priority remains reducing the availability of these dangerous materials.
